Intermission

If you're an international student on a student visa you can apply for support through an Intermission

International students who wish to take a break from the study are required to apply for an Intermission. This is a formal leave of absence that is actioned on your student enrolment and your CoE.

Application Information

Intermission is only available to students who have completed at least one unit. The standard period of intermission is one semester, and this can be approved up to two consecutive semesters. The maximum length of intermission is 12 months.

Please ensure that you apply for Intermission before the beginning of the semester. Each application for Intermission is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the International Compliance team and we aim to have an outcome available to you within ten (10) working days. Please note that if you do not supply supporting documentation your outcome may be delayed.

If you do not re-enrol or apply for an intermission by the relevant Census date, the University will consider you lapsed from your course. This will result in your enrolment and CoE being cancelled and you will then need to reapply for admission to continue your studies.

Application criteria

Applications for Intermission are assessed per the National Code requirements and can only be approved on the grounds of compassionate or compelling circumstances. Please refer to the information on Compassionate or Compelling circumstances to see what is included under this criteria.

You will need to provide independent documentation to support your claims of Compassionate or Compelling circumstances. It is not sufficient to provide only a personal statement outlining your special circumstances, even if it is a statutory declaration or an affidavit. A request without evidence of compassionate or compelling reasons will not be approved. Please refer to the Supporting Documents section of our Compassionate or Compelling Circumstances webpage for more information about this.

How to apply

To apply for an Intermission, log in to the CDU Portal, select the eForm tile and submit an Intermission eForm.

You’ll need to attach appropriate evidence to support your application. Please refer to the information on Compassionate or Compelling circumstances to see what circumstances are considered as Compassionate or Compelling, and what type of documentation is required for a successful application.
