At the commencement of your studies with CDU, you are issued with a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). You must make every effort to complete your studies within the completion date as specified on your CoE. To ensure you complete your degree in the specified period, you must maintain a full-time study load.
It is a condition of your student visa that you study a full-time study load and maintain satisfactory academic progress.
For most courses, a full-time study load is 40 credit points per compulsory semester in a Higher Education course or 20 contact hours per week in a TAFE course. We recommend that you refer to your study plan to see what this looks like for your course as it may involve enrolment in different study periods (e.g. intensive blocks) or a different enrolment pattern if you commenced in Summer Semester.
If you are unable to complete your course by the end date specified on your CoE you will need to apply for a CoE extension.
Application criteria
The University is required to monitor the enrolment of all its international students to ensure they complete their course within the expected duration stated in their CoE. The National Code 2018 only permits an extension to a student’s course duration in limited circumstances as follows:
Compassionate or Compelling circumstances | Please refer to the information on Compassionate or Compelling circumstances to see what is included under this criteria. |
---|---|
Academic progress | Academic difficulties that have resulted in the implementation of an intervention strategy
|
Intermission | If your Intermission request is approved you will automatically get a new CoE when you receive your Intermission approval confirmation. |
Supporting documentation
You will need to provide independent evidentiary documentation to support your claims of Compassionate or Compelling circumstances, or your academic progression.
Every request must also contain a new study plan - this will allow the International Compliance team to determine the new CoE duration. You can request a new study plan from Student Central.
Compassionate or compelling circumstances evidence
Please refer to the information on Compassionate or Compelling circumstances to see what is included under this criteria. When applying for a CoE extension due to compassionate or compelling circumstances, you’ll need to provide independent documentation to support your claims. Please see the Supporting Documents section of our Compassionate or Compelling Circumstances webpage for more information on what is, and is not, considered acceptable supporting documentation.
Academic progression evidence
- For students who have failed units and were unable to make up these units, please provide a copy of your transcript and explain why you were unable to make up these units in the required timeframe.
- For students who have been identified as At risk of unsatisfactory progress, please provide a copy of your Learning Success Plan (LSP) and/or proof of your implementation of the suggested intervention strategies and assistance.
- For students who have been identified as Unsatisfactory progress, please provide a copy of your Learning Management Plan (LMP)
Application information
- Applications for CoE extensions are only processed after the grade release of each semester.
- We will only assess your CoE extension application if your CoE or visa is close to expiring.
It is your responsibility as an international student to ensure you have a current CoE for the semester and to request for a CoE extension before your visa expires.
Please note that applications for CoE extensions are not approved in all circumstances. When applying for a CoE extension you’ll need to provide documentation to support your claim. Please also provide a copy of a new study plan to show your current study situation and to verify how long your CoE extension will need to be.
Each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the International Compliance team and we aim to have an outcome available to you within ten (10) working days. Please note that if you do not supply a study plan your outcome may be delayed.
