Student accounts

Your student computer account is the username and password you use to gain access to various information services provided by CDU.

When you activate your computer account you agree to the CDU Information and Communication Technologies Acceptable Use Policy.

How do I activate my student account?

These are the steps you must follow to activate your student computer account:

  1. After you have received your offer of enrolment, you must register your identity through our activation page.
  2. Using the credentials you used to register in step 1, log into My Student Info and complete the enrolment steps.
  3. Once you have completed your enrolment, please log into My computer account to see what services CDU can offer you.
  4. Please allow up to 24 hours for the system to update your enrolment before attempting to log into Learnline.

Please note: Logging into My computer account should be the first step in resolving issues with your student computer account as it refreshes your account and should rectify any issues.

Where can I activate my student account?

You can activate your student account if you have a current offer to study (in the current teaching period) and you know your student number.

You can activate your student account via:

  • your home or work internet connection
  • student Central
  • any computers in the general purpose computing laboratories - use the username 'kiosk' and the password 'cdukiosk'. This is a general access computer account and will do nothing more than open a web browser for you to use.

How do I login to CDU Microsoft services, such as the portal or email?

1.    Select your CDU student account if you have logged in before and go to step 3,
otherwise select “Use Another Account”.

2.    If you selected “Use another account” enter your student email address
(EG S123456@students.cdu.edu.au).

3.    Enter your CDU password and click sign in.

That’s it, you are logged in to your account.

How do I reset my password?

Please access our MyAccount tool to change your password by following these instructions:

  1. Open the browser and go to https://myaccount.cdu.edu.au.
  2. Expand the section on the bottom titled, “Forgotten your password” and click “reset password.”
  3. Type in your email address and click Next.
  4. You will then have multiple options to reset your password.  Choose the one that best suits your needs.
  5. You will then be sent a link to allow you to choose a new password.
  6. Please allow 15 minutes for the new password change to propagate through our systems.
  7. If you use an email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, etc.) you will need to change your password in the settings accordingly.

If you need assistance with any of these changes, the Service Desk is available to you on (08) 7943 6600 from Monday – Friday 8 am till 6 pm.

Please note: Student passwords only last 180 days before you are required to reset your password.

What does my student account give me access to?

Your CDU student computer account gives you access to the following:

Are students under 18 treated differently for internet access?

Students under 18 years of age are no longer treated any differently, with regard to getting permission to access the internet, than any other student.

How do I change my name?

Your computer account is created using the name provided when you applied to CDU. If you would like to modify your name, you need to do the following:

  • CDU students - advise Student Central of your name change. They will update the Student System and the name on your computer account will automatically update.
  • Partner organisation students - advise your home institution of the required name change. They will update their Student System and pass the information to ours which will cause the name on your computer account to update.

Please note: If you have completed a name change, please notify DTS via our LogIT system or by giving us a call on 08 7943 6600 to ensure that your student email will not be affected.

What is my CDU student email address?

You will be assigned a CDU email address depending on which category you fall into.

You will also get a personalised email address which will look like:

firstname.lastname@students.cdu.edu.au
eg. james.bond2@students.cdu.edu.au (there may be a number after your name if it is already in use by someone else).

Correspondence sent to students by CDU will always be sent to your official CDU email address, and a copy forwarded to your alternate address if you supplied one.

What are my internet usage responsibilities?

As per University Policies, By-Laws, and Federal Legislation, the University monitors internet usage by both staff and students to limit inappropriate use.

Examples of such inappropriate use include:

  • pornographic material.
  • peer-to-peer traffic such as BitTorrent, and including applications such as Limewire, Azureus, uTorrent, Emule, or Shareaza.
  • excessive downloads, due to either direct downloading or excessive use of streaming sites such as YouTube.

Furthermore, if other types of inappropriate use are reported, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of your faculty may request an audit of your internet and email usage.

Other examples of inappropriate behaviour include harassing or abusive email messages to fellow students or staff.

You are responsible for the activity associated with your internet account. If you are found to be responsible for inappropriate use of the internet without justification, your internet account will be suspended / terminated pending review by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of your faculty and the Director of Information Technology Management and Support.

Find out more about the CDU IT policies governing the use of the internet that you agreed to during the activation of your student computer account. Go to the Governance Document Library and Filter "Information or "Email" or "Internet".

What are my student data storage quotas?

CDU undergraduate students are provided with 1TB of cloud storage using OneDrive for Business and 200MB (U: drive) for storing your files. You also get 50GB for your emails. 

Postgraduate students also get 5TB of cloud storage using OneDrive for Business and 50GB for email.

Please note: File storage and email are separate and the quota is not transferable between them.

Special course - unit drives

Should you happen to be studying a course (or unit) that requires a network drive larger than the standard 200MB allotted to all students. The CDU system will identify you and provision a special drive that will be available to you for the duration of this study. It should be noted that once your study (that required the extra storage) has been completed this special drive will be automatically removed. So you should ensure you have a copy of files you wish to keep stored elsewhere.

Why have I received an "Account termination warning notification"?

Your student access is dependent on your current enrolment status. If your status changes and you are no longer entitled to access CDU computer resources, an email is sent to you. This occurs for all students if their status changes to a non-entitled status.

If you believe that an error has been made regarding your enrolment status you need to contact Student Central who handle all aspects of student enrolment.

Should you require access to your computer account after your finish date, you need to approach your lecturer who can request this on your behalf.

Rules regarding access are set by Student Central and implemented automatically on student accounts - any variance on these rules are decided and actioned by Student Central.

Student email

You are provided with a personal CDU email account as part of Microsoft Office 365, the allowance for this email mailbox is 50GB.

To be issued an official CDU email address, you must first activate your computer account. For help activating your account, see student accounts above. This email service is web-based (like Hotmail or similar) and available wherever you can get access to the internet. To access the CDU student email system go to email.cdu.edu.au.

The use of email is governed by the University's information technology policies and by-laws, the Telecommunications Act, and the instructions below. Visit the Governance document library for more information on CDU's policies.

Student email addresses for correspondence from CDU

Every student is given an official CDU email addresses, you can also specify an alternate (or preferred) address from any provider (eg. Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, Bigpond).

Correspondence sent to students by CDU will always be sent to your official CDU email address, and a copy forwarded to your alternate address if you supplied one.

Please note: If you choose to use an alternate email address, it is your responsibility to ensure that emails sent by CDU are getting to you. You need to:

  • ensure your mailbox is not 'full' (only a copy is sent to the preferred email - students will need to monitor the CDU mailbox to keep it within the 50GB allowance).
  • ensure that spam filtering on the preferred mailbox does not remove CDU mail.
  • ensure your email account is kept active by paying any required subscriptions or accessing regularly to keep the mailbox active.
  • update your preferred email address with CDU, if it changes.
  • understand that CDU takes no responsibility for emails that are undeliverable due to network issues, service provider outages or other circumstances out of our control.
Official CDU email addresses

CDU provides two official email addresses to each student as follows:

  1. using your Student ID number, with an "s" at the start. For example, if your student number is 107007, then your email address will be: s107007@students.cdu.edu.au
     
  2. using your first name and surname. For example, if your name was James Bond, then your email address will be: james.bond@students.cdu.edu.au

Please note: If you happen to be the second James Bond at this university, then you will have a number appended to your surname. For example james.bond2@students.cdu.edu.au.

Preferred email address

You can specify a preferred email address. This can be done on the CDU MyStudentInfo page under the heading, My email address.

Please note: If a preferred email address is entered, then email correspondence sent by CDU will be forwarded from your official CDU email address. You will need to make sure that your junk email filters are set up to accept these emails.

Attaching files to an email using OneDrive

With OneDrive for Business, there are two options to attaching files.

  1. Attach as a OneDrive file - This option is useful for sharing files with other students to work in a collaborative environment where both students can be working on the same document.
  2. Attach as a copy - This option is required for students submitting assignments and sending documents for other users to have a copy.

Please note: Option two is the preferred option as it sends a copy of the document to the other person and does not require an ongoing connection to the internet to view/modify - you may tick the box for "remember my choice for files from OneDrive" if you believe this will be your main preference.

Student wireless

CDU provides access to the internet, via wifi (and student computers), for the purpose of allowing you access to online resources in support of your study. All that is required to gain access is a wireless capable device and a valid CDU username/password.

Please note: Due to the nature of wireless it is not possible to guarantee that the occasional black spot will not exist.

The following are not permitted:

  • downloading excessive amounts of data
  • downloading pornography
  • downloading copyright material (films etc).

Students identified in breach of this policy will be contacted and asked to explain their usage.

You can also access the location independent eduroam service. For settings and links to more information please visit eduroam.

Setup automatically

We recommend that students using personal devices connect to eduroam for internet access on campus.

Security

The wireless network is encrypted to safeguard data transmissions over the connection.

Connect your personal device to your CDU email account

Connecting your email using Outlook on a Windows computer

Windows computers

  1. Click on the File Menu
  2. Click the Info option and select Add Account
  3. Fill in your NameEmail address and Password
  4. Click Next (If a security window appears type in your email address and password again)
  5. Click Finish and OK to restart Outlook

Manual Setup

Should the automatic setup not work.

  1. Click on the File Menu
  2. Click the Info option and select Add Account
  3. Fill in your NameEmail address and Password
  4. Tick the box Manual Settings or additional Server types then Next

Fill in the following details?

Username: your email address
Password: your CDU password

Server name: outlook.office365.com

Connecting your email using Outlook on a Mac computer
  1. Click the Tools and then Accounts
  2. Click the + to add an account
  3. Click Exchange or Office 365

Enter your account information and click Add Account. You are likely to get asked for you MFA Passcode (see How to use MFA)

Make sure you use your email address for both the Email Address and User name fields.


Can't add an account automatically?

If you have trouble setting up your account automatically, uncheck the Configure automatically box, and enter the information manually.

Username: your email address
Password: your CDU password. (Staff also need to use an MFA password see How to use MFA)

Encryption method: SSL

SMTP Settings

Outgoing Server name: smtp.office365.com

Connecting your email using an iPhone or iOS tablet

While it is possible to connect other email clients to your CDU email account. We have found that the client that works best and is the easiest to install is the Microsoft Outlook App. For these reasons, this is the app we recommend and provide instructions for.

If you specifically require the use of the default Apple Mail app, you can do so using these setup instructions.

Install the iOS Outlook app

First of all, you need to get the Outlook App from the iTunes store.

After it has been installed.

Open the application and configure it to access your email account.

  • select Exchange
  • type in your email address eg. s123456@students.cdu.edu.au or for staff your regular email address.
  • enter your password.
  • then the MFA passcode. (see How to use MFA)
  • give the account a meaningful name.

Your email will then be available to you on your iPhone or Tablet.

Connecting your email using an Android device

While it is possible to connect other email clients to you CDU email account. We have found that the client that works best and is the easiest to install is the Microsoft Outlook App. For these reasons this is the app we recommend and provide instructions for.

Install the Android Outlook app

First of all you need to get the Outlook App from the Google Play store and have the Microsoft Authenticator App installed and configured.

Non-specific device settings for email set up (manual settings)

Most mobile devices should automatically download the required settings to your device after entering the following details.

Username: your email address
Password:  your CDU password. (Staff may need to use an app password see How to use MFA)

Server name: outlook.office365.com  (if required)

Manual setting

For students or staff using mail clients that are connected using IMAP or POP, there is no way for the server to push out settings updates. Clients should manually re-configure by using the following settings:

Username: your email address
Password:  your CDU password. (Staff may need to use an app password see How to use MFA)
