A new Charles Darwin University (CDU) survey will seek to obtain an accurate snapshot of the experience of gambling in the Northern Territory.

CDU and independent behavioural scientists, who specialise in understanding bad habits, received almost $750,000 last month from the NT Community Benefit Fund to survey gambling patterns.

The survey, which helps inform problem gambling reduction strategies for governments, support networks, and gambling companies, is conducted every three-to-five years in each state and territory in Australia.

Teaching accounting to students as far afield as Zambia, Botswana and Vanuatu has helped see a Charles Darwin University (CDU) Lecturer receive a prestigious national award – the first person from the Northern Territory to be awarded it in over a decade.

Dr Simon Morris has been recognised for his outstanding contributions and professional achievements with a Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) Meritorious Service Award.

He is the first member of the CA ANZ Northern Territory branch to receive the Meritorious Service Award since 2012.

IT students from Charles Darwin University (CDU) have recently tested their technological talents at the 2022 CDU IT Code fair by entering the Data Science Challenge and tackling a complex task. 

The challenge asked students to propose, model and demonstrate a computerised solution to automatically assess the complexity of Australian domestic violence legislation which differs in each Australian state and territory and is often seen as quite complex.

On a remote stretch of tropical coastline shaped by the Northern Territory’s Gove Peninsula, Joelene Puntoriero, 28, and her four-year-old daughter Darcy are living the dream in Nhulunbuy in North East Arnhem Land.

There, Ms Puntoriero, a First Nations woman of Jaru and Arrernte heritage is making the most of her Charles Darwin University (CDU) Bachelor of Environmental Science degree and, in turn, she has been embraced by the local Yolŋu people.

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has made 1,951 offers to students to study undergraduate and postgraduate courses at CDU in 2023.

This year, there were restrictions on the number of Nursing places available. Excluding Nursing from the data, CDU has increased offers from 1,784 in 2022 to 1,835 in 2023.

In the January round over 500 offers were made, with students receiving the good news that they have been offered a place at CDU for 2023.

A total of 1,399 undergraduate and 552 postgraduate places have been made for entry in semester one, 2023. 

A Charles Darwin University (CDU) graduate has used the power of music to help improve language and literacy skills in children across Australia, including First Nations children in remote NT communities.

Over three years, Master of Education  graduate Chris Aitken, from Melbourne, produced a collection of songs and stories written by children living in 50 remote communities across Northern Australia – including Peppimenarti, Barunga, Ngukurr and Belyuen in the NT.

Charles Darwin University (CDU) will receive hundreds of fee-free TAFE places, as part of a new skills deal made with the Northern Territory and Federal Governments to develop the NT’s workforce.

This investment provides immediate support for up to 1500 Fee-Free TAFE and Vocational Education and Training (VET) places, which will be offered in the hospitality and tourism, care sectors including aged care, agriculture, technology and digital, construction, sovereign capability, and other priority sectors including foundation skills.
