CDU Automotive student recognised for standout contribution to industry
A Charles Darwin University (CDU) Automotive student has been recently recognised for his outstanding contribution to industry, winning Automotive Apprentice of the Year at the TIO Automotive Apprentice Awards held in Darwin on Friday, November 30 last year.
Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology student Panormitis Ampelas completed his studies at CDU while working at MY AUTOCare - Automotive Solutions, and said the award was a complete surprise.
“I was totally blown away when my name was announced – I didn’t expect to win at all,” Mr Ampelas said.
“Studying at CDU has helped me build my knowledge and confidence through theory and practical sessions, and both have contributed so much to my understanding of the automotive industry.
“My CDU lecturers were extremely supportive of me throughout my entire apprenticeship.”
Hosted by the Motor Trade Association, the event celebrated apprentices for their diligence to learn their trade, as well as continuing dedication to their chosen automotive profession.
Winners demonstrated technical skills in categories that included automotive refinishing, light vehicle mechanical, automotive body repair, heavy commercial vehicle, and automotive electrical.
CDU Automotive, Transport and Civil Team Leader Leith Darrach said the recognition of knowledge and skill in automotive technologies was a great motivation for students throughout their studies.
“Our automotive students have demonstrated strong capabilities in their apprenticeships to land ongoing employment when they graduate,” Mr Darrach said.
“The automotive industry in the Territory has great prospects for young apprentices and CDU is proud to train them into a rewarding career.”
The awards also acknowledged the support provided by automotive employers in promoting the continuation and completion of apprenticeships in the Northern Territory.
Motor Trade Association CEO Darrell Jacobs said the NT automotive industry is full of opportunity.
“Apprenticeships empower the next generation to be in the driving seat of an exciting and secure career,” Mr Jacobs said.
“Partnering with Charles Darwin University positions the Motor Trade Association to increase this. We look forward to working together to address ongoing local issues such as skill shortages and to support and grow the Northern Territory’s automotive retail, service and repair industry.”
