About
In this Northern Institute (NI) - Australian Population Association (APA) seminar, I share findings from research I conducted in 2023 with Start:ME, an accelerator program for micro-entrepreneurs from diverse and low-income areas in Atlanta. This program is a collaborative effort between Emory University and its community-based partners. Most Start:ME participants are women from migrant and minority backgrounds. I explain how the accelerator program is a catalyst for transforming the knowledge, practical skills, and opportunities of these micro-entrepreneurs, equipping them to establish and operate their micro-enterprises successfully. I consider the Accelerator's design based on relationships with the community partners, volunteer business mentors, funders and other supporters. I talk about my initial misconceptions about Start:ME and conclude by outlining how the insights I gained feed my thinking on what a successful, university-led accelerator for these populations may look like.
Bio
Dr Kate Golebiowska is a senior research fellow at NI, Charles Darwin University and the only 2022-2023 Fulbright scholar from the NT. As a researcher of international migration, she is interested in how migration policy and social structures intersect and can be shaped to improve economic and social engagement for migrants. Kate has recently returned from Emory University in Atlanta (USA), where, as part of her Fulbright Professional Award, she investigated the Start:ME Accelerator program for micro-entrepreneurs to learn and share best practices upon returning to Australia. She serves as Vice-President of the APA.
