Harnika has always had a passion for helping others thrive. As a Maths Teacher in a local Darwin secondary school, her passion is being fulfilled. Harnika studied a Master of Teaching at CDU and she has had the best start to her career.

“When I finished my degree, I wanted to make a really good resume so I could apply for career opportunities,’ says Harnika. “The Career Centre in CDU really helped me with that.”

Harnika was successful in getting the first job she applied for.

“My first job was as a relief Teacher and then in the same school they offered me a contract as a Maths Teacher,” she says.

Supportive learning

During her time at CDU, Harnika received ongoing study support and encouragement.

“The lecturers were always easy to contact and were always there whenever I needed help with assignments,” says Harnika.

Making connections

One of the things that Harnika loved most about CDU was connecting with others.

“CDU always have events, and there are so many different associations you can be part of, such as Indian or Nepalese groups,’ she says. “Associations are a great way to connect with friends but also a way to find some good job opportunities.’

Harnika is proof that this is true.

“I got my first job through Kindness Shake, which is like an international group that I joined,” she says. “Through other contacts, I got another job doing tutoring. I think in Darwin, you get lots of opportunities for work.”

Downtime

Harnika enjoys hanging out with her friends and her husband in her leisure time and visiting the local beaches.

“Sometimes we watch the sunset or take photos,” says Harnika. “Everyone comes in the evening, so it’s a great place to meet the community.”

Harnika is confident that all international students will settle into Darwin life quickly.

“If you’re coming to Darwin, then you won't feel homesick because it’s so easy to make friends and connect with others,” she says. “I would definitely recommend international students to come to Darwin and study at CDU.”
