Student stories
Vaninder’s using the Master of Teaching to achieve her dream
Vaninder is no stranger to studying. Her passion for teaching makes her an enthusiastic student. With a range of diplomas and degrees under her belt, she decided to move to Australia to pursue her Master of Teaching.
While studying the Australian education system, she realised her dream: to become a special education teacher.
She aspires to return to India and open a special education school, free to those who need it. There’s nothing that will stop her from reaching her goal.
The world of teaching
Initially, Vaninder found teaching and placements tough. Navigating the Australian education system – particularly as an international student – was challenging.
She was thankful that the CDU placement staff supported her and helped her understand the Australian education system.
As an active volunteer with Charles Darwin Children’s University, Vaninder had the opportunity to do one of her placements there.
My placements have introduced me to different teaching strategies, and it’s been valuable to learn in different settings.
Supportive role models
Vaninder appreciates the supportive learning environment at CDU.
She feels at ease knowing that she can directly speak to and approach her lecturers when she needs help.
CDU has supported me through good and tough times. The community is so helpful and friendly, especially the teachers. I truly appreciate the support given by Dr Georgie Nutton, Dr Stephen Bolagi and Dr Claire Barlett during my course.
“Dr Georgie Nutton is my inspiration and role model," she adds.
"I want to become a teacher like her."
Positive experiences
As a natural social butterfly, Vaninder loves to network and get involved in community events.
Living in Darwin has broadened her horizons and built her confidence to be more independent.
I volunteered at the CDU sports day and interacted with CDU staff from different departments. I enjoyed all orientations and had a chance to talk with the Vice-Chancellor and share my experience in Darwin.
"One of the unforgettable opportunities was the photoshoot for CDU. I feel lucky to have that opportunity because it helped me find the real me,” she says.
Vaninder is looking forward to more opportunities in the future to give back to the community as a member of the CDU Alumni community.
The next chapter
Now a CDU graduate, Vaninder wants to continue volunteering and working in special education.
I want to gain more experience and serve the community.
"It will be a good start towards my dream although there is still long way to go."
