How I'm pursuing my childhood dream of becoming a teacher

We all have that one teacher who stays with us for life. You remember their lessons and support like it was yesterday. And now that you're all grown up, you want to be just like them.

When Kelsey started studying teaching, she was in the same shoes. Read on to see how she studied her Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) online to become a Year 1 teacher in her home town in regional South Australia. 

What motivated you to study teaching?

Becoming a primary school teacher has been a dream career since I was young. I give credit to my school teachers for inspiring me, because I was motivated by their strong guidance, leadership and compassion. I knew that I wanted to do the same thing when I grew up.

What were the biggest challenges you faced while studying? 

With my busy schedule, I sometimes lacked motivation. I'd often come home from working three jobs, playing sport or catching up with family with no desire to turn on the computer and study.

Lecturers and peers in the same position got me through these days. As an online student, I often turned to them via email or online discussion boards to get going again. Speaking to friends or family also really helped when it got too overwhelming.

I needed the flexibility. I loved that I could study teaching online.

Why did you choose CDU?

I needed the flexibility! I loved that I could study my teaching degree online and fit it in with my busy work and sport schedule. 

I did my lecture- and tutorial-based units online and then worked with CDU and local schools to arrange my teaching placements close to home. All of my placements were in my town, which was both convenient and a good opportunity to network. 

What was the highlight of your teaching degree at CDU?

Teaching is a full-time job and it doesn't stop just because the bell rings at the end of the day. The opportunity to experience four practical placements prepared me to be ready for this level of commitment. I knew right after my first prac that I was in the right career. I loved what I was doing and knew it was all going to be worth it. 

All of my placements were close to home, which was both convenient and a good opportunity to network.

What's your advice to others considering a teaching degree? 

You need to be time efficient, determined to study and be surrounded by a great support network of fellow students, friends and family. 

What do you think it takes to be a great teacher?

My aim is to make the classroom and learning journey as inspiring, creative and fun as possible. I want to put all the love and compassion I was given as a primary school student into the kids of the future. I want them to grow up ready to follow whatever career path they choose with the ultimate success.
