Learning abroad

In her final year of a Bachelor of Humanitarian and Community Studies, Stephanie completed a student placement with the Red Cross in Timor-Leste. She reflects on the placement – and dissects why it was such a formative personal, professional, and academic experience.

As part of her Bachelor of Environmental Science, CDU student Erica Smith seized the opportunity to cross Brazil off her travel bucket list as she took part in the two-week Brazilian Amazon Field Intensive (BAFI) offered by CDU's College of Engineering, IT and Environment. 

From working as an Electrical Marine Technician in the Navy, enrolling in a Bachelor of Engineering, to eventually finding himself in Western India as part of an Engineers Without Borders Summit, CDU student Dion Morrow’s path to becoming an Electrical Engineer as certainly been an interesting one.

Veronica Merton is a second year CDU Bachelor of Midwifery student. She traveled to Bali along with other students from her course, to participate in a study abroad program where the student midwives watched and learned from Balinese midwifery practices. Here, Veronica reflects on her trip. 

Each year, one high-achieving Law student from CDU is selected to travel to Harvard Law School and work as as a legal intern at the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinic. Paul Larder is one of the students who went on this four-week, life-changing trip. 

NT local Shannon has graduated with great memories from her time at CDU: she travelled to Indonesia on a research trip, made lots of new friends with social clubs, and studied hard to finish a Bachelor of Engineering/Master of Engineering (Civil & Structural).

Motivated by a desire to see how people learn in other countries, William Jansen decided to combine his teaching degree and travel. He travelled to Germany as part of CDU’s Global Mobility program, spending four weeks at the Philipps-Universität of Marburg in their Summer University Program. 

Studying a semester abroad can bestow benefits such as learning another language, experiencing another culture, meeting new people, personal growth and having a great adventure. Katie experienced all pf that and more.
