Structures Glossary

Term: Description:
Curriculum Item Comparison

A Curriculum item can be compared to another one (of the same type) by displaying the first one in CRSW2000 and then clicking on the CI Comparison link. Details for the two Curriculum Items will be displayed side-by-side.

Complete Date

See Structure Date.

Created (date)

Date automatically displayed next to the Timeline Name field in a Timeline (CRSW2650) when the Timeline is first created (saved).

Current Instance

See Latest Instance.

Curriculum Item

curriculum item

A course, unit set or unit that can be connected to another Curriculum Item via a Relationship to form a Course Structure, Unit Set Structure, or Dependencies (CRSW2600).

In Timelines (CRSW2650) you can select teaching period options for the following Curriculum Items only: units, special requirements and free text items.

Dependencies

A graphical diagram (i.e. visual representation) that displays relationships (i.e. 'dependencies') between Curriculum Items of the same type, i.e. course to course(s), unit set to unit set(s) or unit to unit(s). Dependencies are created in the 'Hierarchy Viewer' page (CRSW2600). They exist independently of Structures.

Dependency

The term used for a 'Impact Item' listed on the Impact Analysis pop-up page (CRSW2640) for a context Curriculum Item in Dependencies (CRSW2600).

Can also be interpreted as the Relationship between a Curriculum Item and its parent Curriculum Item in Dependencies (CRSW2600).

Default Timeline

A 'default' Timeline (CRSW2650) is the Timeline that is displayed when you first access the Timeline page (CRSW2650).

The first Timeline created for a Course Structure, is automatically made the 'default' Timeline for the Course Structure. However, once multiple Timelines have been created for the Course Structure, you can make another Timeline the default, if required.

Effective Date

See Structure Date.

Free Text

Free Text

A rectangle shape that enables input of information (Free Text) regarding additional course requirements, such as electives, or special requirements. Often represented as an 'unspecified Curriculum Item'.

Details are recorded when adding the Free Text object via the Add pop-up page (CRSW2605).

A URL link can also be included with the Free Text, for example, to link to a course requirement in the institution's Handbook.
A URL must include the protocol, domain (and/or port) and path. For more information, see the 'Link URL' field description in the Add page (CRSW2605).

In Timelines (CRSW2650), Free Text items contribute to the overall Timeline Total value based on the value you manually assign it in the Timeline grid.

Impact Analysis

This function is initiated via the Impact Analysis icon for a selected Curriculum Item in a Structure or Dependencies (CRSW2600).

It displays a list of all parent Curriculum Items that are potentially impacted by a future change to the context Curriculum Item. For more information, see Impact Analysis (CRSW2640).

Note: The same function is also run when performing a rollover for a course, unit set or unit version in SMS Forms.

Latest Instance

A Structure or Dependencies with no Structure End Date. This is the last updated instance of the Structure or Dependencies.

Also referred to as the 'latest effective instance' or 'current instance'.

The latest instance of the Structure and Dependencies is displayed by default in CRSW2600.

Placeholder Mode

In a Timeline (in CRSW2650), you can switch to Placeholder mode by clicking on the Placeholder icon. Placeholder mode permits the creation of placeholders which will generate prompts on the Student Map page to direct a student's Course pathway selections.
When creating Placeholders, you must nominate the the number of placeholders and also the level at which they are displayed in the Student Map.

Quantifier Value

A whole number used to specify the number of Curriculum Items required to satisfy course completion requirements.

A value is added to the Lower Qualifier field, or to both the Lower Qualifier Value and Upper Qualifier Value fields (if a range is to be specified).

Quantifier values form part of the Relationship Description. A Quantifier value is used to specify the number of Curriculum Items, credit points or contact hours required to satisfy a Relationship in Structures and Dependencies.

Relationship

relationship

Represented by a bubble shape in Structures and Dependencies (CRSW2600).

A Relationship is used to connect and group Curriculum Items in Structures and Dependencies (CRSW2600). For example, a Relationship can be used to represent a single stream of study, such as a major.

It is labeled with the completion requirements for the stream it represents.

A Relationship label, i.e. ' Relationship description', is defined via the Add pop-up page (CRSW2605), when adding Curriculum Items to Structures and Dependencies.

Relationship Description Fields

Mandatory fields displayed in the Add pop-up page (CRSW2605) that constitute the Relationship Label that is displayed on a Relationship in Structures and Dependencies (CRSW2600). These fields are:

  • Relationship Label (CRSW0120)
  • Relationship Qualifier (CRSW0110)
  • Relationship Qualifier Attribute (CRSW0115)
  • Quantifier value (i.e. a whole number)

For example:
[Relationship Label] MAJOR + [Relationship Qualifier] Must do all + [Relationship Qualifier Attribute] Units.

Although Relationship descriptions are similar to course and unit set Completion Rules in SMS Forms, there is no connection with the Rules subsystem.

Relationship Label

Defined in the Relationship Labels page (CRSW0120).

A Relationship Label constitutes part of the Relationship Description that is defined in the Add pop-up page (CRSW2605) when adding items in Structures and Dependencies (CRSW2600).

Relationship Qualifier

Defined in the Relationship Qualifier page (CRSW0110), Relationship Qualifiers are institution-defined values mapped to the following System Relationship Qualifiers: DO, ALL, BETWEEN, MORETHAN, LESSTHAN, MOREEQUAL, LESSEQUAL, NOTDO, BALANCE, DOBEFORE, DOTOGETHER, CODEAS, ALTEXIT, ARTICULATE.

They constitute part of the Relationship Description label displayed on a Relationship (bubble shape) in Structures and Dependencies (CRSW2600).

Examples include: 'must complete', 'do', 'do before'. They are used in conjunction with Relationship Qualifier Attributes.

Relationship Qualifier Attribute

Defined in the Relationship Qualifier Attribute page (CRSW0115), Relationship Qualifier Attributes are institution-defined values mapped to the following System Relationship Qualifier Attributes: contact hours, credit points, units, unit sets, relationships and special requirements.

Relationship Qualifier Attributes are used in conjunction with Relationship Qualifiers and quantifier values, and constitute part of the Relationship Description label displayed on a Relationship (bubble shape) in Structures and Dependencies (CRSW2600).

Special Requirement

special relationship

A requirement for completion of a unit, that is not in itself a unit of study at the institution, for example, a First Aid certificate. See CRSF4110.

In Timelines (CRSW2650), special requirements have no credit points or contact hours value and consequently are not assigned a value for a selected teaching period (i.e. grid cell) in the Timeline and do not contribute to the overall Timeline Total value.

Relationship Start and End Dates

If a Relationship or item is added to a Structure or Dependencies (CRSW2600), then a Relationship Start Date (equal to the system date and time) is automatically added to the Relationship or item record in the database.

If a Relationship or item is removed from a Structure or Dependencies (CRSW2600), then a Relationship End Date (equal to the system date and time minus one second) is automatically added to the Relationship or item record in the database.

If a Relationship is modified (for example, its Relationship Description is modified), then a new instance of the Relationship is created. That is, a Relationship End Date (equal to the system date and time minus one second) is automatically applied to the existing Relationship, and a Relationship Start Date (equal to the system date and time) is automatically applied to the modified Relationship in the database.
In addition, all items attached to the modified Relationship are also end-dated and a new Relationship Start Date (equal to the system date and time) is applied to each item.

For Structures and Dependencies in a Proposal Instance (PAAW1100), no Relationship Start and End dates are applied to Relationships when you add, remove or modify a Relationship or item.

Structure

A graphical diagram (i.e. visual representation) representing a course or unit set. A Structure is created in the 'Hierarchy Viewer' (CRSW2600) page (for example, as a hierarchical tree structure diagram). It is made up of Curriculum Items, special requirements and free text items that are connected to each other via Relationships (bubble shapes).

It is likely that a Structure will have multiple branches or 'levels', each representing a component of the context course or unit set, such as a major or elective component of the course or unit set.

Timelines (CRSW2650) can be created for a Course Structure, if required.

Structure Comparison

Compare two structures by dispaying the first one in the CRSW2600 Structure page and then clicking on the Comparison link. The two Structures will then be displayed side-by-side.

Structure Date

The date (and time) on which a Timeline is set to COMPLETE or INACTIVE. The Structure tree (displayed in the Timeline) is fixed as at this date.

The Structure Date is displayed next to the Create date in the Timeline header.

Also referred to as the Complete Date or Effective Date.
(Note: The Structure Date should not be confused with the 'Structure Start and End Dates' that applies to Structures and Dependencies.)

Note: A Structure date is not used in Timelines in Proposals (PAAW1100) as it is not possible to change the Timeline status from INCOMPLETE.

Structure ID

A unique Structure ID is automatically applied to both a Structure and Dependencies belonging to a specific a Curriculum Item when you first access the CRSW2600 page.

The Structure ID is saved to a table in the database and is not visible to the end-user.

Structure Start and End Dates

A Structure Start Date equal to the system date and time is automatically applied to Structures and Dependencies in the database, in the following situations:

  • on first accessing the Structure or Dependencies page (CRSW2600) in the CRS subsystem.
  • when the Structure and Dependencies for an approved Proposal Instance (PAAW1100) are transferred from the Proposals subsystem into the CRS subsystem via the relevant Transfer job. In this case, a Structure Start Date equal to the system date and time (at the date and time of Transfer), is automatically applied to the Structure and Dependencies.

A Structure End Date is only applied to the latest instance of a Structure and Dependencies in the CRS subsystem when an approved Proposal Instance (PAAW1100) for the context Curriculum Item is transferred from the PAA subsystem into the CRS subsystem via the Transfer job and replaces the latest instance. In this case the Transfer job applies a Structure End Date (equal to the system date minus one second) to the latest Structure and Dependencies instances in the CRS subsystem, and the transferred Structure and Dependencies thereby become the latest instances in the CRS subsystem.

Although multiple historical instances of a Structure and Dependencies (i.e. with a unique Structure ID and Structure Start and End dates) can exist in the database for a single version of a Curriculum Item, only the current instance of the Structure and Dependencies is viewable and editable in CRSW2600.

Structure Status

The status applied to a Structure. The following statuses are available: INCOMPLETE (default), COMPLETE and INACTIVE.

If a Structure is set to COMPLETE or INACTIVE, you cannot modify the Structure. However, you can still modify associated INCOMPLETE Timelines belonging to the Structure, if required.

Timeline

Created for Course Structures (CRSW2600) only, Timelines (CRSW2650) are essentially a grid in which you are able to specify the teaching period options for each Curriculum Item (i.e. unit, special requirement or free text) belonging to the Course Structure.

Multiple Timelines may be created for a Course Structure to represent the different course pathways, components and/or different modes of study that are available for the context course.

Timeline Status

The status applied to a Timeline. The following statuses are available: INCOMPLETE (default), COMPLETE, and INACTIVE.

Once a Timeline is set to COMPLETE you cannot change the status of the Timeline back to INCOMPLETE.

In Proposals, only existing INCOMPLETE Timelines associated with a Course Structure are displayed in a Proposal Instance (PAAW1100). It is not possible to change the status of Timelines in Proposals - their status remains set to INCOMPLETE.
