Emergency and Disaster Risk Communication

Overview

This microcredential on emergency and disaster risk communication is a competency-based learning opportunity that focuses on the development of skills and knowledge in the field of risk communication specifically in the context of disaster risk management. It will provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to communicate effectively before, during and after a crisis event.

Students will learn how to develop and implement disaster risk communication plans, how to work with the media and communicate with different audiences, create key messages, and using social media to communicate risk during a crisis.

  1. Identify and analyse various communication strategies, models, and tools employed in emergency and disaster risk communication scenarios.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in applying emergency and disaster risk communication strategies and principles to diverse crisis scenarios.
  3. Effectively communicate with various stakeholders during emergency and disaster situations.

      Students will demonstrate interview skills in which they will be asked to respond to questions about a crisis or risk scenario. The interviews will be evaluated based on the student's ability to clearly and concisely communicate key messages (10 min).40%
