Overview

The Post Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing provides the registered nurse working in the perioperative environment the opportunity to undertake further study and specialise in anaesthetics/recovery or scrub/scout. The degree draws from evidence and research to build knowledge and skills that support the provision of safe nursing care within the perioperative environment. Units of study are designed using contemporary standards, policies and guidelines that are influential in perioperative care and the role of the perioperative nurse. Offered online the degree allows the registered nurse to apply theory to practice as they advance their skills and capabilities as a perioperative nurse. The degree is offered part-time over 1 year.

What will I study?

Post Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing will provide students with the essential knowledge that underpins evidence-based practice. Students will complete carefully constructed units guided by current healthcare needs to gain advanced knowledge in perioperative nursing.

Course structure

Students will select to undertake specialisation in either anaesthetics and recovery or scrub/scout.


A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 40 credit points (cp) as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless otherwise indicated.

Students entering this course with advanced standing, or wishing to vary their study plan due to work, personal, financial or other reasons should use the table as a guide to create an individual study plan.

Entry requirements

Admission criteria

Applicants for this course must meet all of the following qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a recognised Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent international qualification; and
  • Applicants must also hold current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Division 1 registered nurse; and
  • Current employment in a perioperative nursing field is required. Applicants should include details of their relevant employment in their application.

Hospital-trained nurses with current registration may also be considered.

To gain entry into Charles Darwin University, all Higher Education applicants must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency requirements for their chosen course of study. From 2025 ALL applicants will be required to supply evidence of this at the time of application. The minimum English language requirement for this course is met by either undertaking previous education from an English-speaking country or undertaking one of the following English language tests and obtaining the minimum requirements listed below.
