The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is designed to give a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world.

The qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of wines with regard to their style, quality and price. The qualification provides the in-depth product knowledge of Director Adam Chapman required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in product selection in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Successful candidates will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal wines of the world and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and price. They will consequently be in a position to advise management to answer customer queries authoritatively and make informed selections of wines in a variety of situations.

This educational course focuses on the supervisor or team leader in a restaurant, bottle shop or resort or the wine enthusiast who wants to learn about world wines and their regions, climates and geographical influences and to develop a deeper knowledge regarding wines around the world. Entry is best with a pass in the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or at least 5 years in the world wines industry.

Unit 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling.
  • How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal still wines of the world sparkling wines of the world fortified wines of the world.
  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality.

Unit 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting.
  • Wine® (SAT).

Cost per course

$1495.00. This includes wines, lectures, books, exams, and a certificate upon passing.

What is included in the price?

WSET Book, workbook, approximately 80-90 wines, exam of 50 multiple choice questions, and four written questions and tasting of two wines using WSET L3 SAT format (Global Certificate and PIN if a pass is achieved).

Who is Adam Chapman?

Adam Chapman has been active in the wine and spirit industry for 35 years, mostly as a winemaker for wineries in France and Australia (Barossa Valley, Hunter Valley, South Burnett Valley and the Granite Belt). He has held leadership roles for numerous wineries, notably two large Queensland wineries/distilleries where he developed projects between $2-$30 million operations from green field start-up sites.

This is where his skills and attention to detail have created demonstrable success, not only in winemaking, blending and tasting, but also in winery design, process flow streamlining, eco installations, waste management and plant installation, and environmental building design, including co-generation and tri-generation.

For the last ten years, his focus has been on wine and spirit education, teaching the WSET wine and spirit courses from Level 1 to Level 3 in wines, and Level 1 to Level 3 in spirits. Adam was the first educator in Australia to teach Level 3 in wines and Level 3 in spirits.

Adam is also a content writer for Certificate IV in Artisan Fermented Beverage (Distilling), as well as an Australian Distillers Assoc, Distillery Safety Course.

He is currently head distiller at a new distillery on the Sunshine Coast. Avid WHS Safety in Distilleries.
