'Everything has a reason. Gambling has a reason': Tiwi-led research developing a gambling management strategy for Wurrumiyanga.
Early in 2023, the Mantiyupwi Family Trust engaged a team of four Tiwi researchers to work with the Ground Up team at CDU to research gambling in the community of Wurrumiyanga. In this presentation, the Tiwi team talk about their research, which, beginning by speaking to senior Tiwi women, has taken seriously the role that gambling plays in everyday life while also working to help keep Tiwi culture strong and Tiwi people safe. They will share the voices of Tiwi people reflecting on their experiences with gambling, including its past history and current impacts, as well as the outcomes of their collaborative work designing a proposed Ground Up gambling management strategy.
This research aimed to assist the Mantiyupwi Traditional Owners in managing gambling in Wurrumiyanga. In sharing this work, the Tiwi research team presents a locally developed response to a locally identified concern and reflects on their role and responsibilities as community-based researchers leading a project such as this.
Presenters
Ainsley Kerinaiua, Kristelle Orsto, Rebecca Pupangamirri and Lorenzo Kerinaiua are Traditional Owners of the Mantiyupwi clan estates, which today include the community of Wurrumiyanga. They all have long-term experience working across various services and governance organisations in Wurruimyanga. They were nominated by the Mantiyupwi Family Trust and Traditional Owner group to lead this research project exploring strategies for managing gambling in the Tiwi Islands. They worked collaboratively with members of the Ground Up research team at the Northern Institute, CDU, and through this work, have been awarded Indigenous community-based researcher credentials.
