Overview

The Diploma of Advanced Manufacturing will equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career within Australia's rapidly growing industry 4.0 and advanced manufacturing sectors. Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth industrial revolution that employs digital technology, automation, and cyber-physical systems to optimise production in the manufacturing environment.

Over the next 10 years traditional workplaces will see significant change due to emerging technologies including Industry 4.0, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Additive Manufacturing, Digital Twinning, Supply Chain 4.0, Robotics and Mechatronics. This course will equip you to be part of the growing workforce in these sectors.

With this diploma, you qualify for entry-level engineering roles, or you can continue onto other engineering and IT degree courses such as CDU's Associate Degree in Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering Science or Bachelor of IT. 

Commencing students employed in the defence, aerospace, and associated manufacturing industries may be eligible to apply for a Commonwealth-funded place. Please contact testlab@cdu.edu.au prior to submitting an application to discuss your eligibility.

Commonwealth Support Place

Commonwealth Supported places are available in this course to students who meet one of the following residency requirements:

(a) be an Australian citizen, who will complete some of your course of study while resident in Australia; or

(b) a New Zealand citizen; or an Australian permanent visa holder; or an eligible former permanent humanitarian visa holder; who studies the entire course while living in Australia.

What will I study?

No prior knowledge is required and an engineering and IT background is provided.

Course structure

The diploma can be entered at both the start or mid year, and offers Semester 1 and 2 units.

The course is structured to combine the basic IT and engineering knowledge necessary for an industry 4.0 advanced manufacturing ethos.

There will be 8 core units delivered by CDU staff.


A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 80 credit points (cp) as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.

This course will be discontinued from Semester 2 2024. 
YAMAN1 units are offered by existing undergraduate-level Engineering courses. Any enrolled students who have not completed YAMAN1 need to contact the Course Coordinator to discuss their options to continue study 


Course Changes from Semester 1 2025 

The following unit changes will occur in 2025:

ENG231 will be replaced by ENG265. Students who completed ENG231 prior to 2025 do not have to complete ENG265. 
ENG230 will be replaced by ENG151. Students who completed ENG230 prior to 2025 do not have to complete ENG151. 
ENG104 will be replaced by HIT140. Students who completed ENG104 prior to 2025 do not have to complete HIT140.

Entry requirements

Admission criteria

Admission requirements are met by one of the following:

  • Successful completion of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (or equivalent) and the awarding of an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 60*.
  • Successful completion of a national qualification at Certificate III level or higher.
  • Successful completion of at least 0.5 year of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma.
  • Overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications considered equivalent to the above Australian qualifications.
  • Attainment of a STAT Multiple Choice score of 140.
  • Successful completion of the Tertiary Enabling Program, the Preparation for Tertiary Success courses, or other recognised tertiary preparation course.
  • Submission of an acceptable personal competencies statement and/or employment experience.
  • Defence members with service of 1 year or more at the following ranks (or higher) meet the academic entry requirement for this course:
    • Navy: Seaman, Able Seaman, Leading Seaman
    • Air Force: Aircraftmen/Aircraftwoman, Leading Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman, Corporal
    • Army: Private, Lance Corporal, Corporal

* After any applicable adjustment factors have been applied.

Restricted Access Arrangement (Employer Reserved Places)

A place in this course is made available under an arrangement between the University and an employer or industry body. The arrangement restricts enrolments via this channel, in some of the places in the course, to students sponsored by their employer or industry body. Employers are required to demonstrate that processes are in place to ensure students will be released from the workplace to attend study.

Along with the advertised entry requirements, applicants will be required to evidence the following:

  • An employer registration (no fee commitment) for work release, this will need to be endorsed by Faculty for each applicant prior to offer.
  • An employment check to ensure ANZSCO requirements met using those reflected defence, aerospace, and associated manufacturing industries.
