Psychology clinic re-opens doors at CDU

A clinic offering much-needed psychology services to Territorians will re-open at Charles Darwin University this week.

The CDU Psychology Clinic will be staffed by intern psychologists who are undertaking advanced postgraduate training in clinical psychology at a larger premises on Casuarina campus.

Course co-ordinator Associate Professor Suzanne Midford said all interns were provisionally registered psychologists with the Psychologists’ National Registration Board and would work under the supervision of fully registered, experienced and clinically endorsed psychologists.

“The student placements at the clinic are part of a Masters course in Clinical Psychology and offers students the opportunity to gain professional registration as a psychologist in the Northern Territory,” Ms Midford said.

“The course provides quality training from professionally registered and experienced staff, while also supporting the health and wellbeing of Territorians.”

Ms Midford said the clinic filled a void by providing services often difficult to access in the Northern Territory such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and Cognitive assessments.

“Our aim is to make a difference in the community by helping to provide diagnosis and treatment, as well as providing students with experience in liaising with practitioners in other disciplines, and in operating a clinic as a small business,” she said.

She said the clinic would offer a range of therapies and assessments for people of all ages.

“We have a very experienced team to oversee a variety of assessments and subsequent reports on a full range of developmental, intellectual, and behavioural assessments for both children and adults,” Ms Midford said.

“The clinic will provide students with a wide range of experiences from individual and group therapy to a range of assessments and report writing.”

Ms Midford said they also hoped to build relationships with local mental health organisations.
