Australia’s growing demand for cyber security literacy has prompted Charles Darwin University to delve more deeply into cyberspace and offer three new high-tech courses next year.

Associate Professor - Engineering Krishnan Kannoorpatti said the three postgraduate courses would provide a solid understanding of the concepts and practices to identify and resolve information security challenges on computer systems and networks.

“We are offering them to information systems, information technology and computer science graduates wishing to upgrade their qualifications in the area of cyber security,” Dr Kannoorpatti said.

“Graduates will be equipped with cutting-edge skills that are highly sought after in the fields of security analysis and ICT network security, and they will be trained to undertake the internationally recognised Certified Information Systems Security Professional certification, recognised by many employers in the industry.”

Dr Kannoorpatti said CDU was about to appoint an Associate Professor of cyber security, having entered into a $700,000 five-year agreement with the Northern Territory Government.

“This is an exciting initiative that will enhance CDU’s ability to carry out research in cyber security, improve our capacity to provide advice to government and local businesses and improve the skill-base in the Northern Territory.”

Dr Kannoorpatti said the imperative to develop resilience against ever more sophisticated cyber threats had never been greater.

“Several global ransomware incidents this year and the denial of service attack on the Australian Bureau of Statistics last year serve to remind us that cyber security is a national security priority.”

The courses are the Graduate Diploma of IT Cyber Security, the Graduate Certificate of IT Cyber Security and the Master of IT Cyber Security.
