CDU hits the mark internationally

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2018 reveal that Charles Darwin University is on track to achieving its goal of becoming an international university.

The just-released rankings show that CDU registered strong improvement in the past year in the area of “International Outlook”, which measures the university’s ability to attract students and staff from across the world, and the extent of its academics’ international research collaboration.

The result places CDU among the top 25% of universities globally for International Outlook.

Vice-Chancellor of Charles Darwin University Professor Simon Maddocks said the result for International Outlook – one of five pillars measured in the rankings – was welcome.

“The university’s International Outlook position has risen from 77.2% to 82.2%, which reflects the work that is taking place across the institution to engage internationally,” Professor Maddocks said.

“We are committed to increasing our delivery of education, training and research services internationally, particularly to Asia.”

Citations, or the influence of the research undertaken at CDU, also ranked in the top 25% of universities globally.

“Universities have a critical role in society to spread new knowledge and ideas, and it is particularly satisfying that the Northern Territory’s university holds its own among the best in the world on this measure,” he said.

Professor Maddocks said that this year THE had included an extra 124 universities to the rankings, bringing the total number to 1102 institutions, and this had caused a slight dip in results for the remaining three pillars.

“We are ranked in the 301 – 351 category globally, which for a university of our size and age is a result we can be proud of.”
