A new ranking of universities in the Asia Pacific region places Charles Darwin University within the top 40 of more than 240 institutions assessed.

Times Higher Education (THE) Asia-Pacific University Rankings, which are produced for the first time this year and released this morning, place CDU in equal 38th place among 243 universities from the wider region.

Vice-Chancellor of CDU, Professor Simon Maddocks said the Northern Territory should feel particularly pleased with this recognition of the university given the Territory’s drive to intensify its engagement and profile in the Asia Pacific region.

“The Asia Pacific rankings are based on the same rigorous criteria as THE’s World University Rankings, but have been modified to better reflect the characteristics of the region’s institutions,” Professor Maddocks said.

The rankings used 13 performance indicators across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, with the greatest weight given to research (volume, income and reputation) and citations (how CDU’s research contributes to new knowledge and ideas).

“While CDU is a relatively young university, it has an impressive record of international recognition for the impact of its research on the lives of people in Northern Australia and the Asia Pacific region,” he said.

“We have distinct strengths in the areas of environmental and natural resource management, Indigenous knowledge systems, a range of health issues, and in the development and implementation of sound public policy.”

CDU shared equal 13th position on the list of 35 Australian universities that achieved a place in the rankings.

Professor Maddocks praised the efforts of CDU staff in contributing to further international recognition for the work of the university.

“This ranking is especially gratifying given that our strategic plan, Connect Discover Grow, identifies our collaborations with our Asian neighbours as critical to the long-term success of CDU.”
