Art students about to let fly

Charles Darwin University visual arts students will put their printmaking skills on display during an end-of-year exhibition that celebrates the Top End.

Scrub fowls, mangroves and other iconic North Australian images will feature in about 20 artworks at the “Fledgling” exhibition, at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art (NCCA) from Friday (September 30).

Printmaking lecturer Mats Unden said students used a range of printing techniques, including linocut printing, soft ground etching, digital printing, woodcut, etching, and screen printing.

Mr Unden said the exhibition would be assessed as part of the students’ courses and aimed to challenge traditional perceptions of printmaking.

“The exhibition is called ‘Fledgling’ as it represents the time for students to fly on their own, although most of them have already taken off,” he said.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Law, Education, Business and Arts Professor Peter Kell will open the exhibition at NCCA on Friday, from 6pm until 8pm.

The exhibition will run until Sunday, 2 October.
