Alice Springs residents are learning the decadent art of dessert decoration through an accredited short course at Charles Darwin University.

Vocational Education and Training lecturer Hayley Tobin said the Cake and Cookie Decorating course had been so popular that a second course would be held at the Alice Springs campus next month.

Ms Tobin said the 10 participants had gained skills in tempering and moulding chocolate and coating honey ganache, caramel, hazelnut and other sweet fillings.

She said participants also learned flood and pipe icing techniques, and gained skills in writing on cakes and creating a structured cake in the shape of a watering can.

“There has always been a general interest in cake and cookie decorating in the community and we wanted to build on that,” Ms Tobin said.

“Some have children and want to improve on their cake decorating skills while others are here to socialise and learn a creative and new skill.”

The next course will be held at the Alice Springs campus on August 8. For more information contact the CDU Hospitality and Tourism office P: 8959 5200.
