Orientation offers window on to uni life

Hundreds of local, interstate and international students are getting ready for the start of a new study semester during Orientation Week at Charles Darwin University.

Up to 300 new and returning students are expected to attend activities at Casuarina campus this week, with events also scheduled at Katherine, Alice Springs, Sydney and Melbourne campuses and centres.

Senior events officer Nattapong Teerakaew said the high-energy atmosphere during the event aimed to encourage students to feel comfortable with their surroundings and make new friends.

Mr Teerakaew said the event kicked off with an outdoor breakfast where students received diaries and show bags to help them navigate through the week.

“The first week of semester is an important time for students, especially for those who are studying at university level for the first time,” he said.

“Orientation aims to help students make a smooth transition into university life before the semester begins and their workloads build up.”

Activities during the week will include guided campus tours, workshops and information session on topics such as course requirements, scholarships and essay writing.

On Wednesday, international students will receive an official welcome from CDU’s Office of International Services and can attend workshops on culture, safety, and overseas student health cover.

On Friday, domestic and international students will be invited to put on their problem-solving hats to compete for and win prizes in the CDU Amazing Race challenge.
