Print exchange project lands in Darwin
Visual art students have flocked together to raise awareness about one of the world’s greatest flight paths used by millions of migratory birds.
The 15 Charles Darwin University students from Darwin and Alice Springs used multiple printmaking techniques as part of the exhibition, “Flyway Print Exchange – Birds Without Borders Award 2016”, on until June 24.
The works of six of the students were selected to feature in the “Our Feathered Friends” exhibition at the CDU Art Gallery later this year.
Editions of the winning works will be donated to the CDU Art Collection and the Birdlife Australia Flyway Print Exchange project.
Certificate IV in Visual Arts student Leah Clarke said she gained skills in a range of printmaking techniques during of the project, which would help her achieve her goal of becoming a professional artist.
Leah said she travelled to Buffalo Creek in Darwin to photograph and make observe migratory birds in the area before creating her winning entry, “Early morning, Buffalo Creek”.

- “Now you see me – curlew” linoleum print by Angela Bevan, Darwin
- “Merging through ancestral winds” linocut and embossed print by Weniki Hensch, Darwin
- “Wading, wimbrel, wandering” screen print by Kerrie Taylor, Darwin
The Flyway Print Exchange aims to highlight the East-Asian Australian Asian Flyway that about 50 million migratory waterbirds travel, encompassing 22 countries including Australia, Alaska, Russia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the western Pacific. The project is an exchange between artists living in the countries along this flight path.
