Seminar to celebrate birth of Modern Greek state
Charles Darwin University will this week host a free evening cultural seminar, in the lead-up to Greece’s National Day next week.
Head of Greek and Hellenic Studies Associate Professor George Frazis said the seminar would include music, dance and a lecture on the Greek War of Independence.
“We are delighted to once again invite the people of Darwin to join with the Greek community for a celebration, this time for the 195th anniversary of the formation of the Modern Greek State,” Dr Frazis said.
“The program will be devoted to the heroes and heroines of the Greek Revolution of 1821.
“One of those is General Yannis Makriyannis, one of the most outstanding military leaders of the Revolution.
“Makriyannis inspired his men, who were few in number, to a series of notable victories, against stronger opponents.”
Dr Frazis said he planned to deliver a Greek language and culture seminar to the broader community each month.
The first seminar will be held this Friday 18 March from 6.45 pm to 8 pm in Blue 5.1.01, Casuarina campus.
