A pledge for gender equality will be the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) afternoon tea hosted by the Northern Institute at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus.

All money raised from the gold coin entry and cupcake sale at the event will assist the Darwin Aboriginal and Islander Women's Shelter in buying duress alarms and security lighting.

This year’s special guest will be Law Society Northern Territory CEO Megan Lawton, who will speak on the topic: “You’re not eligible for maternity leave and other lies I’ve been told by HR”.

Northern Institute Director Professor Ruth Wallace said the event also would provide an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding contributions women have achieved for the local Darwin and wider communities.

Professor Wallace said members of the community unable to attend the event could participate on social media with the hashtag, #PledgeForParity.

CDU Chancellor and former NT Administrator the Honourable Sally Thomas AC will present the opening address at the event, as one of the event’s ongoing supporters since 2011.

The Northern Institute IWD event will be held at the Mal Nairn Auditorium at Casuarina campus on Tuesday, 8 March from 2pm until 4pm. To register, visit W: cdu.edu.au/northern-institute
