Territory’s finest prints to go on display
An exhibition of prints from the Charles Darwin University Art Collection will pay homage to the proud tradition of Territory printmaking, which extends back more than 70 years.
CDU Art Gallery Curator Joanna Barrkman said the priNT@CDU: printmaker’s perspective exhibition would contain about 50 “diverse and eclectic” works, including some by Australia’s most accomplished printmakers.
“Among works by national and international artists will be a diverse cross-section of Territory-based artists such as Dion Beasley, Timothy Cook, Franck Gohier, Chips Mackinolty, Therese Ritchie and Chanyi Henry,” Ms Barrkman said.
“These and other Territory artists are nationally and internationally recognised for their printmaking.”
Ms Barrkman and CDU Lecturer in Printmaking Mats Undén had co-curated the exhibition, which will be open to the public for eight weeks from Saturday 27 February.
“We have carefully selected a range of works from our 1000-plus limited edition Collection that will highlight diverse and innovative printmaking techniques.
“The exhibition demonstrates excellence in the application of printmaking techniques including lithography, etching, dry-point, screen-printing and relief printing.”
Ms Barrkman said CDU would host a complimentary public program, comprising workshops, school tours and floor talks, during the two-month exhibition.
“This exhibition extends CDU’s track record in having fostered printmaking across the Territory over the past 25 years.
“Basically, there will be something for everyone.”
Ms Barrkman said she was delighted that Nomad Art Gallery Director Angus Cameron had accepted an invitation to formally open the exhibition.
“Mr Cameron has extensive experience in fostering cross-cultural collaborations with the arts industry in the Territory and nationally over the past 20 years.”
The exhibition will be held to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Australian Print Council.
Entry to the exhibition priNT @ CDU – printmaker’s perspective is free and will be open to the public from Saturday 27 February until Friday 22 April in the CDU Art Gallery, The Chancellery, Casuarina campus.
