Nursing Museum receives Community Heritage Grant

An Australian Government grant will assist the Charles Darwin University Nursing Museum in its efforts to preserve an important slice of Northern Territory history.

Curator of the museum Janie Mason said the $4500 Community Heritage Grant would support a significance assessment of the museum’s collection of artifacts.

Ms Mason said artifacts would be assessed by an external expert to determine their historic, artistic, scientific or social significance.

“The grant is important in supporting the efforts to preserve the CDU Nursing Museum at a grassroots level,” she said.

“It is wonderful that the Australian Government is encouraging local communities to care for the nation’s heritage with these grants.”

Ms Mason also recently attended a three-day intensive preservation and collection management workshop in Canberra. 

The workshop was held at the National Library of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive.

“While the grant provides the funds, the workshop offered the expertise to help us protect our collections and preserve our Territory nursing stories.”

The 2015 Community Heritage Grants totaled $438,710 and were distributed to 75 community groups across the country to assist in the identification and preservation of community-owned and nationally significant heritage collections.
