Greek poetry in motion for public seminar

The rich poetry of one of Greece’s most influential wordsmiths will be recited at a public seminar at Charles Darwin University on Friday (30 October).

Head of Greek Studies Associate Professor George Frazis said the works by early 20th Century poet Constantine Cavafy would be read in Greek and some in English at the seminar.

Dr Frazis said all poetry lovers were welcome to attend the event, which would also feature live music and discussions after each reading.

“Poetry is very important to Greek identity, with the first written evidence of Greek language being Homeric poetry,” he said.

“Poetry is part of Greek culture and tradition as well as everyday life.”

Dr Frazis said Constantine Cavafy’s work had helped revive interest in Greek poetry worldwide after he passed away in 1933. He said Greece had made significant impacts in the literary world, with two Greek writers becoming Nobel Prize winners in the last century.

He said the seminar was part of CDU’s commitment to strengthening ties with the community and providing accessible education.

The Greek Poetry Club seminar will be held in building Orange 6, Casuarina campus on Friday, 30 October from 6pm until 8pm.
