Food lovers can sharpen their sausage sizzling skills at the first NT Food Week at Charles Darwin University’s Palmerston campus next week.

Participants will learn how to carve up different kinds of meats, create flatbreads from scratch and barbecue the lot at the event’s BBQ Masterclasses.

Local chefs and bakers can also enter their culinary creations in various cooking and baking competitions during the week.

Baking Associations of Australia and the Australian Culinary Federation NT have partnered with CDU to host the event, which will run from Monday, 28 September until Friday, 2 October.

CDU’s Commercial Cookery and Bakery team leader Robert Schwerdt said people of all skill levels who had interests in barbecued foods could join the masterclasses.

“The Palmerston campus has become a training hub for food production and delivery,” Mr Schwerdt said.

“A growing number of people in Darwin are seeking training to complement their food-related hobbies, which we endeavour to cater for at the campus.”

CDU Alice Springs butchery lecturer Rick Griffiths will teach gourmet sausage and pattie making alongside bakery lecturer David Barker during the masterclass, on campus on Monday and Wednesday from 8.30am until 1pm.

Other activities include the Australian Apprentice Competition and the Worldskills Regional Cookery Competition on Tuesday and the NT Baking Competition, NT Culinary Competition and the VETIS Worldskills Competition on Thursday.

NT Food Week sponsors include Arafura Catering Equipment, EOI Bakery, MAURI anz, PFD Food Services, Oostra Spices, Goodman Fielder, KrioKrush, Bulla Dairy Foods, Manildra Group Darwin Fish Markets, Humpty Doo Barra and NT Seafood Council.
