International artists experiment at Darwin Festival
An intercultural art project aiming to foster creative dialogue between Asia and Australia is being project managed by a Charles Darwin University student.
Post-graduate student Emma Schuberg has been assisting four artists working together to create artistic experimentations for the upcoming “Sonic Tides” exhibition as part of the Darwin Festival.
The artists from Indonesia, Timor-Leste and Australia have come together as part of a four-week Harbour International Arts Residency at the Darwin Visual Arts Association (DVAA) artist studios.
“I am intrigued by the way that art can be applied to disrupt, resist and restitch relationships,” Emma said.
“I am also observing what arises from this intercultural and trans-disciplinary art project, along with how the artists’ conceptualisations and processes engage with audiences in Darwin.”
CDU School of Creative Arts and Humanities students also will have opportunities to gain hands-on experience in assisting the artists during the residency.
The project has been developed by the DVAA artist-run space in partnership with CDU and the Darwin Festival.
The residency has brought together acclaimed Asian visual artist Jompet Kuswidananto (Indonesia) with multi-instrumentalist and installation artist, Dale Gorfinkel (Australia) and visual artists, Mariano Palmira Goncalves (Timor-Leste) and Weniki Hensch (Northern Territory).
The studio will be open for public viewing today (13 August) and tomorrow from 12noon until 5pm and on Saturday from 10am until 3pm.
The “Sonic Tides” exhibition will open on Sunday, 16 August from 5pm until 7pm. The exhibition will run until Wednesday, 19 August.
