Design graduate receives top architecture award

A design graduate with a passion for tropical architecture has won an esteemed award.

Charles Darwin University Bachelor of Design graduate Sarah Young said her affinity with Darwin architecture stemmed from her family’s long association with the Top End.

“I love the history of Darwin and my family went through Cyclone Tracy, so that sits quite strongly with me,” she said.

Sarah recently won the Student Award at the 2015 NT Architecture Awards and is undertaking a three-month paid placement at Mode Design in Darwin through a CDU faculty award.

She said her placement at Mode Design was giving her insight into legal and technical aspects of the design industry.

“I am very determined and am critical of my work so that I can perform to the best of my abilities,” Saran said.

“In Darwin we have a very different environment to the southern states, which is why I believe we need to design buildings that allow us to adapt to the climate we live in.”

Other winners at the awards night included the Menzies School of Health Research facility at CDU’s Casuarina campus, which received the Public Architecture Award and the Interior Architecture Award.

The Flinders University Northern Territory Medical Program Development at Casuarina campus received the Educational Architecture Award.
