Festival goers will have the opportunity to learn useful Greek language phrases at a series of seminars during the Greek Glenti this weekend.

The “Greek in 15 Minutes” seminars run by Charles Darwin University staff will aim to teach participants basic Greek sayings and encourage them to converse with Greek-speaking locals at the festival.

Charles Darwin University Head of Greek Studies Associate Professor George Frazis said the seminars would promote Greek language and culture courses offered at CDU.

“These seminars at Glenti will give the non-Greek speaking public a taste of Greek language and culture,” he said.

Dr Frazis said attendees also could learn a verse from the famous Greek song by Nobel laureate Odysseas Elytis, “Notional Sun of Justice”, during a “Music and Poetry” seminar.

“We support the presence of the Greek community and its culture at this great event,” he said. “As a university, we believe it is fitting for an academic presence to be there.”

Also included at the seminars will be a history talk on the iconic Parthenon, and also a short history on Greek language.

The CDU seminars will be held at the Greek Glenti on Saturday and Sunday.
