Open Day climbs to new heights

A unique crate climbing challenge for budding horticulturalists will make its first Charles Darwin Open Day appearance at Casuarina campus on Sunday.

The crate climbing workshop for youngsters aged 5 to 16 years old will reflect one of the many Vocational Education and Training courses showcased in exciting and interactive ways at Open Day.

Horticulture and Aquaculture Team Leader Scott McDonald said visitors could learn basic arborist skills, such as balance and agility, at the crate climbing workshop.

“The event gives us an opportunity to show the public some of the many fun and educational learning experiences CDU has to offer,” Mr McDonald said.

Visitors can also experience a range of trades workshops on Open Day, including operating a cherry picker, using a welding simulator and learning to tie sea-worthy knots for boats.

Those who have no fear of confined spaces can try out the Confined Space Training Simulator, as part of the Civil Construction workshop.

For those who prefer to interact with nature, plant sales, fish feeding and other environmental workshops will also be running on the day.
