University poised to unveil big rig

Charles Darwin University’s new $300,000 prime-mover will be unveiled at Alice Springs campus during Info Night tomorrow.

The gleaming 10-tonne big rig will enhance the university’s capacity to deliver courses to remote communities throughout the Red Centre.

Driver Peter Rose said the Caterpillar CT630LS was the perfect vehicle for towing the university’s mobile classrooms over long distances across rough terrain.

“Its first journey will be to retrieve one of our MALUs (mobile adult learning units) from Arlparra (260km north east of Alice Springs),” Mr Rose said.

“But the public will have the chance to see it first-hand at the campus tomorrow afternoon during our information evening.”

The Info Night will provide prospective students, friends and their families with an opportunity to discover the university’s flexible pathways into study, and programs to support student success.

Visitors will be encouraged to explore campus facilities with a guided tour and learn about study scholarships.

A number of etchings created by art students will be on display in the library entrance, and local music students will provide entertainment.

Several prizes will be awarded on the night, including an Ultimate Study Pack, featuring a 13-inch MacBook Pro.
