When Akansh arrived in Australia from India, he was excited to study a Bachelor of Accounting at Charles Darwin University (CDU). He was hopeful that it would set him up for a bright career. Turns out he was right.

Akansh is now working as an external auditor at KPMG. He credits CDU for his success.

“The teachers at CDU are really qualified, and they help you a lot,” says Akansh.

“There are plenty of resources available to help you to understand the topics further, as well as mentorship programmes from alumni. The CDU careers centre is also a wonderful resource.”

Making connections

While studying, Akansh was an active member of the CDU community. He was involved with the student association, attended many networking events and started volunteering with organisations such as Kindness Shake.

“I started to get to know a lot of people and build my connections in Darwin,” he says. “That’s how I got the interview with KPMG and got offered the job.”

Akansh continues to build connections.

“I still go to networking events, I still talk to people and make new friends,” he says. “That's the big advantage of Darwin. People are easy to talk to as they’re very laid back, and the city is only small, so after a while, you get to know lots of people.”

Work and study

Akansh says there are many opportunities in Darwin to work while you study.

“You can work in fields like hospitality, sales and retail,” he says. “After you graduate with your degree, you can start working in your field with the help of networking events and past work experience. Darwin is smaller than other cities, so you’ll get noticed more easily for job opportunities.”

Just like home

Settling into Darwin has been easy for Akansh thanks to the welcoming community.

“I feel like it's an amazing opportunity for every student to be here,” he says. “There are a lot of events all the time for inclusion and diversity, which makes you feel so welcome.

The connection between people and the huge diversity of people from all over the world makes it a great place to live.”

Final words of wisdom

“I think one of the greatest pieces of advice I would give to my fellow future international students is to get rid of all of your winter clothes,” says Akansh. “In Darwin, you will never need them!”
