From engineering to technology: Kalyani’s journey through STEM
After completing a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering in India, Kalyani quickly worked her way up to a leadership position at a local outsourcing organisation. Here, she noticed one critical factor to the ongoing operations of the organisation: information technology.
The right course
Kalyani’s natural curiosity saw her observe how information technology improves enterprises by providing electronic security, storage and efficient communication. In an ever-evolving technological age, she was inspired to pursue a postgraduate qualification in this field.
She began looking into universities that could satisfy her curiosity. She was impressed by the Master of Information Technology (Information System and Data Science) course offered by Charles Darwin University.
“This program would allow me to specialise in both information systems and data science,” Kalyani explains.
The other programs I explored were not as multidisciplinary. Furthermore, joining CDU meant joining a connected community; a home away from home.
Unique opportunities
Kalyani has enjoyed the practical assessments offered during her course, including working on a project with the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Transport and Road Safety.
“We had to find out the top leading factors which caused road accidents in NT and what were the main reasons leading to these accidents and provide an efficient solution to how these accidents can be reduced and NT roads become the safest to drive with no more accidents and fatalities," she says.
She credits her success to her positive attitude.
Darwin is full of opportunities. Open yourself in this wonderful place, give your best and best will surely come back to you. In Darwin, your positive attitude will enable you to see possibility in every challenging circumstance no matter what it is.
Connect with new people
Kalyani joined CDU’s Buddy Program to meet other international students.
“I have been a senior buddy twice now, and I have already registered the third time,” says Kalyani. “Through it, I’ve made friends from all over the world, like China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and more. So many students arrive with questions, and I am pleased to satisfy their curiosity.”
A campus for everyone
CDU’s postgraduate IT courses are strategically located in Darwin and Sydney, two vastly different vibrant cities.
While Sydney is world famous and bustling with life, Kalyani chose Darwin as she loves the tropical weather and the friendly, inclusive community.
"I found that Darwin was urban but also surrounded by natural wonders. It has towering natural monoliths, swimming holes and absolutely incredible natural sights,” Kalyani states.
Darwin was beyond what I expected. It’s totally different and more amazing than what it looks on the Internet. The helping hands, the smiles, the ‘how’s it going?’ and the beautiful mother nature!
