Why world-traveller Ema chose Darwin
After growing up in Slovakia, Ema was keen to explore the rest of the world.
She completed her bachelor’s degree in Slovakia and then took time off to travel. After five years, she was eager to get back into study and enrolled in a master’s degree at Charles Darwin University (CDU).
Ema had instantly fallen in love with Darwin when she visited during her travels, Ema loved the city and all its uniqueness. She was also impressed with the courses available at CDU, making the decision to return to Darwin to study at CDU easy.
Lots to explore
Darwin is a dynamic, multicultural city with over a hundred nationalities.
Ema loves the fact that Darwin city is quite small. She sees the stress-free and laidback lifestyle as a bonus compared to other cities.
The beautiful surroundings caught Ema’s attention straightaway.
My first impression was that I’m on a Tropical Island with urban buildings in the centre. Everything is green with lots of trees and gardens around. I love the Palm Trees across the whole city which makes you feel like you are on holidays all the time.
The tropical wet season is when nature springs to life with flowing waterfalls and vibrant greenery. During semester break, Ema can’t wait to hit the road, set up camp and explore the Northern Territory.
The community
In Darwin, Ema gets to experience the community spirit firsthand. She can see huge potential in getting involved in local community work and volunteering.
As an active person, Ema enjoys getting out and about on the weekends – whether that’s shopping at the markets, watching the beautiful sunset, or attending community events.
I’m already enjoying bike rides around the city’s beautiful coastal paths, and the free tennis courts in the northern suburbs are amazing too.
CDU events
CDU empowers students to become part of the University community by engaging with their lecturers and joining clubs and societies.
As an International Student, Ema is making the most of the events at CDU, especially at the beginning of the semester.
These events have allowed her to meet classmates and make friends along the way.
The beginning of your journey at university can be an overwhelming experience, so I would encourage everyone to try to make time for community activities, student gatherings and all the events at CDU.
