Completing a research project, or doing a research degree, may seem a long way from creative projects, such as filmmaking.  Why should a method from such a remote line of activity be useful to scholars, scientists and academics?

When preparing any research text, a writer needs to think about a number of key structural elements (e.g. introduction, arguments, findings).  In a similar way, a script writer needs to prepare key structural elements of their narrative (e.g. setting the scene, developing the core story, and the climax).

Just as storyboarding can help them in this process, this technique can also be used by researchers.
