Charles Darwin University welcomes new Vice-Chancellor and President

The Council of Charles Darwin University (CDU) has announced the appointment of Professor Scott Bowman AO as the university’s new Vice-Chancellor and President.

Professor Bowman, who will commence in May 2021, joins CDU as a distinguished university leader.

Currently the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Western Sydney University, he has previously served as Vice-Chancellor and President of Central Queensland University, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Registrar at James Cook University.

Professor Bowman began his professional life as a radiographer and worked in several London hospitals before starting his teaching and lecturing career. He left the UK for Australia to take up the position of Head of the School of Clinical Sciences at Charles Sturt University and holds a Master of Politics and Government, a PhD in Clinical Decision Making and a Master of Business Administration.

CDU's Chancellor, the Honourable Paul Henderson AO said Professor Bowman was an excellent fit for CDU and was well equipped to position the university for the future.

"Scott brings vast amounts of experience and knowledge to this role, having served as Vice-Chancellor and President of another dual-sector institution, Central Queensland University, for almost 10 years,” Mr Henderson said

“He has a detailed, contemporary understanding of the complexities and challenges faced by both the Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training sectors.

"He is a passionate ambassador of regional universities, and their role in education, industry, community and the workforces of the future. Scott's collaborative style and his clear vision demonstrate great leadership and I do not doubt his steadfast commitment to the staff and students of CDU."

Professor Bowman said he was proud to be joining a leading dual-sector university.

"Recently I have met CDU staff and students and have been struck by their deep commitment to the university, the Territory and the community. The university really does change so many people’s lives for the better,” Professor Bowman said.

"I am very aware that there has been change at CDU, and there is work to be done to build an outstanding university. I look forward to leading a period where together we build on 30 years of pioneering Territory spirit.”

Professor Bowman said CDU was one of Australia’s most unique and important universities.

“We are now going to work together, students, staff and community to make CDU the most successful. We will remain unwavering in our mission of bringing education and training to students irrespective of their circumstances,” he said.  

“We will also undertake research which has real-world impact. My wife Anita and I have spent a lot of time in the NT and can’t wait to live in this incredible part of the world and become Territorians."

Professor Bowman replaces former Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Simon Maddocks. Professor Mike Wilson (Provost) will remain as CDU's interim Vice-Chancellor and President until Professor Bowman arrives.
