Student to enhance disaster training in Myanmar

A senior public servant from Myanmar will enhance natural disaster and emergency management training practices in the region while studying at Charles Darwin University.

Deputy director of Myanmar’s Disaster Management Training Centre, Thurein Tun said he would develop training practices at the centre with knowledge gained from the Master of Emergency and Disaster Management course.

Mr Tun said the centre offered disaster management training to a range of citizens in Myanmar, including government workers, youth volunteers and other community stakeholders.

“Like many countries in the region, Myanmar is prone to natural disasters including fire, floods, earthquakes and cyclones,” he said.

“We need to build our capacity in order to reduce, manage and respond to natural disasters and emergencies.”

Mr Tun said one of the centre’s priorities was to establish a network of young volunteers, who could spread information about national disaster risk reduction within their communities.

He is supported by an Australia Awards Scholarship from the Australian Government and is studying the course at CDU’s Casuarina campus.
