Select students excel in science

Select high school students with a passion for science have been put to the test at a special event on Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus.

The 10 students from Darwin and Alice Springs schools were encouraged to think about how to use science to solve world problems during the Year 11 Science Excellence Experience event.

Along with global issues such as yellow fever and climate change, students also reflected on everyday problems in their own lives and considered how they could solve them by using science.

During the two-day event, students participated in environmental, engineering and chemistry activities, such as observing geographic systems differences in Darwin and Indonesia through remote sensing and landscape analysis.

Students also analysed fluids through heat exchangers and a distillation column, and participated in a chemistry workshop.

Physiotherapy, medicine, engineering, biology and chemistry were of particular interest to the students involved in this year’s event.

The students came from Darwin High School, Casuarina Senior College, Kormilda College, The Essington School Darwin and St Philip’s College in Alice Springs.
