Nursing Museum receives $12,000 boost

A $12,000 Northern Territory Government grant has come as a timely boost for CDU’s Nursing Museum, which plans to modernise its behind-the-scenes practices this year.

Curator Janie Mason said the funds would allow the museum to employ a part-time administrative officer.

“We were delighted to hear that our application for funding through the Regional Museums Grants Support Program was successful,” Mrs Mason said.

“The grant for $12,300 is part of a broader package worth $15,000 when you factor in the value of volunteer hours.

“We will install a more effective record management system that will allow us to better manage day-to-day activities such as cataloguing and researching, and we’ll be able to respond to public visits and queries more efficiently.”

Mrs Mason said the museum, which traces its roots to humble beginnings in 1987, now included a substantial collection of photographs, artefacts, instruments and memorabilia.

“It’s a small but nonetheless important collection that was assessed last year to be significant in terms of our national heritage.

“Increasingly in recent years the museum has been a valuable resource for researchers preparing books, occasional papers and other materials.”

Permanent displays are housed on CDU’s Casuarina campus in the nursing wing (Building Blue 5) and the Chancellery building (Building Orange 12).
