Law student sets sights on London
A Charles Darwin University student is one of six Australians to be hand-picked by a prestigious international law firm to participate in a work experience program in London.
The program, offered by United Kingdom-based law firm, Herbert Smith Freehills, gives exceptional students from Australian universities the opportunity to attend a four-week paid internship from 25 November – 20 December 2013.
CDU Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting major) student Luxmy Chandran said she was very grateful to have been selected to take part.
“It was a gruelling selection process, but having been chosen, it feels like all the hard work throughout my degree has paid off,” Luxmy said.
“It is wonderful to have the opportunity to work on deals and cases for some of the biggest organisations in the world, as well as work and train alongside some of the world's best lawyers."
During the selection process, Luxmy was required to demonstrate an exemplary academic record, complete online tests, attend a face-to-face interview in Melbourne, and complete mock scenarios with partners posing as clients.
During her placement, Luxmy will shadow a partner or senior associate and be given real work for real clients. She also will be involved in workshops and presentations that provide an insight into the breadth of the firm’s practice, and have the opportunity to network with other Australian interns and British students.
Interns demonstrating strong potential throughout their work experience term may be offered a position as a trainee lawyer with the firm after completing their studies.
Luxmy balances her study commitments with her position as a law clerk with Darwin firm, Ward Keller Lawyers. She is CDU Talloires Network Secretary and CDU Law Students’ Society President.
In addition to being an active member of Darwin’s Indian community and a fluent Tamil speaker, Luxmy is a talented violinist, and dance performer, teacher and choreographer.
When she graduates from CDU, she hopes to pursue a career in commercial, banking and financial law.
