Irish musicians to reunite in Darwin performance

Two Irish folk musicians will reunite on stage after almost 30 years apart at a free public event at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus.

Head of Creative Arts and Humanities Professor Brian Mooney, said he looked forward to reuniting with fellow musician and academic from the National University of Ireland Dr Fearghal Morgan.

The performance will take place during a celebration of traditional Irish culture at the event, “An evening of Irish music, songs and dance!” at CDU’s Indonesian Garden on Wednesday, 9 September.

Professor Mooney said he would sing and play guitar, mandolin and tin whistles during the performance while Dr Morgan would sing and play the fiddle.

“It is going to be such great fun,” he said.

“We had a wonderful time travelling around Europe together 27 years ago, so performing together will bring back a flood of memories.”

Professor Mooney, who is originally from Belfast, said he and Dr Morgan had represented Ireland at a range of festivals and concerts across Europe.

“This will be a very special event for Darwin, and anyone who would like to listen to quality traditional Irish music and have a dance is welcome to come,” Professor Mooney said.

Local musical ensembles will also perform at the event, including the “VoxCrox” community choir and “Still Belting Out!” senior citizens choir, along with a dance performance by the Darwin Irish Dance Association.

The BYO public event will be held at the Indonesian Garden at Casuarina campus on Wednesday, 9 September from 6.15pm.
