High achievers receive scholarships

More than $900,000 worth of scholarships have been awarded to Charles Darwin University students to assist them in their studies.

Bachelor of Design student Naimo Abdiwahid was one of the 78 students to receive a scholarship, out of more than 500 applicants.

Naimo received the Charles See Kee Leadership Scholarship, which will help achieve her dream of becoming an architect.

The Somali student grew up in a Kenyan refugee camp and began her studies at CDU after migrating to Darwin in 2011.

“I want to help people build their own houses and have a home, and I am now one step closer with this financial support,” she said.

“I don’t know which path I’m going to take but I will see.”

Scholarships were awarded to students from interstate and in the Northern Territory, including rural Central Australia, Alice Springs, Darwin and Palmerston.

The highest individual scholarships, worth up to $67,500, were awarded by the NT Department of Infrastructure, which included stipend payments and paid work during semester breaks.

Several new scholarships were also awarded this year, including the Cheers Indigenous Teaching and Learning Scholarship.

Scholarships were also awarded to students in the CDU Aspire program and CDU Into Uni program for the first time this year.

Scholarships were awarded across a range of different fields, such as health, business, education, environment, IT, sport, Indigenous engineering, arts and hospitality.
