A free bilingual online course for people across the world who are looking to improve their knowledge of accountancy will be launched today.

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in accounting, entitled “Who’s Counting: An interactive introduction to everyday accounting”, was developed by Charles Darwin University in partnership with China’s Anhui Normal University. It will be available partially in Chinese (Mandarin) and fully in English and aims to provide anyone from high school students to business owners with an interactive and immersive experience.

Associate Professor in Accounting Wendy James said the course was structured to give people a taste of accounting in a fun and innovative way with the flexibility to complete it when and where they wanted.

“The course is an introduction to accounting and includes films, music and interactive exercises covering the three modules of basic accounting, financial accounting and management accounting,” Dr James said.

“It is aimed at high school students who might be looking at accounting as a future career, or business owners who want some tips on improving or understanding topics such as book-keeping, financial statements or bank reconciliations.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Martin Carroll said the course was developed by the CDU Business School in collaboration the Economics and Business School at Anhui Normal University (ANU) in Wuhu, China and demonstrates a growing and important partnership.

“Anhui province in south central China has a sister province relationship with the Northern Territory,” Professor Carroll said. “Anhui Normal University is one of the partner universities in the Charles Darwin University Confucius Institute, which has a focus on teaching Chinese language and culture through innovative new media and creative arts technologies.”

Dr James said the interactive course was built by the CDU Innovative Media Production Studio and would be open for people to join at any time from 5pm on Tuesday, 8 March for 10 weeks.

“All up the course will take around 20 hours to complete, so participants can do an hour or two when they get a spare moment in their day,” she said. “Those completing two of the three modules will receive a certificate of completion.”
