Fledgling artists make mark on local scene

Charles Darwin University visual arts students hope to make their mark on Darwin’s art scene when they exhibit their work at the Fledgling Printmaking Exhibition 2017.

The 2nd annual printmaking exhibition will showcase traditional and non-traditional printmaking techniques as well as screen-printing works from Certificate IV in Visual Arts to Bachelor level students.

Printmaking lecturer and exhibition curator Mats Unden said the event aimed to support fledgling art students find their wings and take flight. 

“We have upwards of 25 students participating in this year’s exhibition,” he said. “Each work is unique in concept, application, materials used and the underlying story behind the piece.”

He said the overall theme of “Fledgling” enabled students to push the boundaries and break some rules, to create a wide range of works.

“The students have been encouraged to look beyond traditional printmaking and create innovative, experimental and unique works,” he said.

“There is a mixture of debutantes as well as a small number of more experienced students who are quite active in the art scene in and around Darwin.”

Certificate IV student Allyce Peckett said that, although she was nervous, she was looking forward to showcasing her work alongside her peers.

“We have had many challenges and learning curves throughout the year, to see your creation installed and on display in a professional setting such as the Northern Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) is hugely rewarding,” she said.

The exhibition will open on Friday 13 October from 6pm - 8pm and will run until Saturday 21 October at the NCCA, Vimy Lane Parap. For more information, contact NCCA on T: 8981 5368.
