Exhibition explores graduates’ roles as artists, women

Completing their undergraduate studies in visual arts is just the beginning for five talented artists who have developed an exhibition set to open tomorrow.

Joanne Green, who balances her visual arts practice with her work as a visual art and graphic design teacher at O'Loughlin Catholic College, said the exhibition followed on from the group’s Charles Darwin University 2011 show, entitled Afterlife.

“Afterlife focussed on our artistic practice post-university, while this exhibition, Afterlife II, presents the next installation of our careers as artists, documenting the development and evolution of our practices,” Ms Green said.

“The theme that runs throughout the works speaks of the multiple roles women play as they carry out their responsibilities as mothers, daughters, friends, partners, professionals, citizens, academics and artists.”

Former CDU Bachelor of Visual Arts students Daniela Eugster, Sarah Moller, Yvette Martin and Nena Zanos make up the graduate cohort which completed studying between 2009 and 2010.

The group will be joined by five other female artists from the Northern Territory to display their works in the exhibition, which includes paintings, paper cuts, prints, sculptures and wearable art.

The exhibition opens on 23 August at 6pm and will run until 14 September at the Darwin Visual Arts Association Gallery, 56 Wood Street, Darwin City. It is open to the public and entry is free.
