Environmental researcher wins NT award

An environmental scientist who has been working to improve resource management and health outcomes in remote communities has won the Researcher of the Year category in the 2017 Territory Natural Resource Management (TNRM) Awards.

Charles Darwin University’s Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods research fellow Rohan Fisher was nominated for his work supporting good natural resource management outcomes in Eastern Indonesia and Northern Australia.

Mr Fisher’s work leverages the power of new free geospatial software tools, data and access portals, developing comprehensive and localised training material.

“I was surprised and honoured to win the TNRM Researcher of the Year award,” he said.

“This award has come after 21 years working in applied research and capacity building throughout the Northern Territory and Eastern Indonesia. 

“It’s been amazing the variety of incredible opportunities for engaging with the diverse cultures and landscape across our region, and to be able to learn and share skills for improved natural resource management. 

“It’s also been a privilege to work with some brilliant researchers at CDU and to engage with some visionary people in Eastern Indonesia who have supported my work.”

Each year TNRM hosts a conference and awards ceremony that is the only event of its kind in the Northern Territory. It brings together hundreds of people from all walks of life who are dedicated to caring for the environment.
